Cuddalore Periyar Arts College Students Protests against errors in Tiruvalluvar university results

Recently released results of Tiruvalluvar University are charged to have too many mistakes. While some results have internal mark break up some others don’t have. Some of the students got results published for the papers they had passed in the previous semester. A few others results were declared for the papers they did not have in their course. Students who resorted to strike wanted responsibility to be fixed on those who had committed the mistakes.

They gathered in large numbers in front of the college and raised slogans. Police reached the spot and pacified them. A report from Cuddalore says that students of Periyar Government Arts College here went on a strike for the second consecutive day on Wednesday seeking rectifications of discrepancies that have crept into the 2013 December semester results posted online. The students alleged that the results were jumbled as students who were aiming at good grades had failed. Those who had not taken the examinations were marked “pass” and those who had written the examinations well were marked “fail.” Such anomalies were found across the board, from first year undergraduate courses to final year postgraduate courses. On Tuesday, students of Kandasamy Naidu College for Women here too boycotted classes alleging similar complaint. Two different versions are doing the rounds : the publication of results has been outsourced by Thiruvalluvar University this time on the plea that it was a seasonal task; and certain discontented teachers might have been behind the muddle. Registrar of the university M.Jayakumar told this correspondent that the issue had been blown out of proportion by certain staff members. “The university is not against the student population,” he said.

It was quite normal that the results released online would have permissible error to the extent of 0.01 per cent. For instance, of the total number of results for 8 lakh answer scripts written by 1.75 lakh students from 110 colleges affiliated to the university, the results of only about 2,400 were found faulty. It was a common practice to put up a disclaimer on this score, and the error would be rectified before handing over the mark-sheets (hard copies). Controller of Examinations P. Asokan said that these mistakes could have been committed by students, teachers and the university. On Wednesday alone the mistakes pointed out by 10 colleges, including Tindivanam government college, were corrected. Mr. Asokan termed it “a vindictive act of those who are keen on spoiling the reputation of the university.” There were certain teachers who earlier threatened to boycott the valuation of answer scripts seemed to have become hyperactive to provoke students, without any justification. The thrust of his speech was on “Providing Power to the Powerless”. He further highlighted the significance of inclusive growth where all sections of the society had an equal opportunity to develop. Eradication of poverty and casteism would pave the way for progress; Indian’s success largely depended on the preserving its diversity, working towards unity in diversity was important. Further, India’s foreign policy should pursue aggressive diplomacy in dealing with countries like Pakistan and China. India could play a leading Security Manager role in Asian continent. Yet another aspect that needed to be highlighted was protecting consumer and human rights. Sustaining democracy and decentralization of political powers through Panjayat Raj institutions is another strategy for India’s democracy. In the context of Food Security Act 2013, the Principal reinstated the statement of Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu that the public distribution system must be effectively secured for providing food all the poor.

Rs.1.42 crore free laptops distributed to Periyar Government Arts College students

The Akilesh Yadav’s Government in Uttar Pradesh has emulated the innovative scheme of Jayalalithaa’s Government of providing free laptops to students, said M.C. Sampath, Environment Minister. He was delivering a speech at a function held in Periyar Government Arts College here to distribute laptops worth Rs. 1.42 crore to 1,040 students on Saturday(13/04/2013) . The Minister said that Chief Minister had launched many welfare schemes that had caught the attention of the entire nation. He called upon the students to put the laptops to the best use. Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar, Principal V.N. Viswanathan participated.

       Rural Industries Minister M.C.Sampath giving away a laptop to a student of Periyar Government Arts college in Cuddalore on Saturday

            Rural Industries Minister M.C.Sampath gave away as many as 802 free laptops to the students of Periyar Government Arts College here on Saturday (31/03/2012).

    At a function held on the premises of the college, the Minister also laid the foundation for a ch  emistry laboratory to be built at a cost of Rs 50 lakh and a women's hostel to be constructed at a cost of Rs 80 lakh. Speaking on the occasion Mr Sampath said that he was always amenable to fulfil the demands of the college. The women's hostel was a long-felt need as it would enable those hailing from far-off places to enrol themselves in the college.

       He said that a majority of the students studying in the college belonged to the economically weaker sections of society. Therefore, to enable them to acquire knowledge to face the competitive situation in the contemporary world, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa launched the free laptop distribution scheme. With laptops, the students could access the knowledge sources the world over. They should utilise the device to plan their academic career and excel in their chosen field. The government had launched many a scheme for promoting higher education and therefore, he called upon the students to utilise the opportunity to go up in the ladder of success. District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo said students should keep their ears to the ground. They were told to keep track of the recent trends in the academia and the job market.

Cuddalore Periyar Arts College Students participate in campaign for blood donation

A State-wide mobile campaign for blood donation in Cuddalore on Wednesday. 

 

CUDDALORE: 

        Blood is a vital fluid for the living as well as those struggling for life after an emergency such as an accident or a surgery. Its importance will be felt when there is a chronic need for blood and a frantic search for the suitable blood group to save a life, said U.Tamilarasi, a second-year undergraduate student in the Periyar Government Arts College here.

        She reflects the concern shown by the youth in general for those who are in a critical condition to require blood transfusion. Ms. Tamilarasi was one among the group of students who turned up at Anna Stadium on Wednesday to become part of the State-wide campaign for blood donation, launched jointly by the Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society and the National Blood Transfusion Council in connection with World Blood Donor Day (observed on June 14).

         A National Service Scheme volunteer, Ms. Tamilarasi had come forward to donate blood for the first time. She dismissed the notion that blood donation would sap energy because the body would recoup the requisite quantity of blood within 36 hours. Her classmate S.Krishnaveni too was of the view that by taking nutritious food the donated blood could be replenished. It was a soothing thought for them that the donated blood would save the life of someone, somewhere. They would not mind donating blood whenever called for.

For S.Muthukumaran, final-year diploma student of Krishnaswamy Polytechnic College, it was the maiden blood donation. Soon after donating blood, he munched biscuits and gulped down the soft drink and a bottle of drinking water supplied by the organisers.

          Two ultramodern air-conditioned buses equipped with pushback cushioned seats and cold storage facilities are touring the State, in two different directions — south and north — to collect blood from voluntary donors ever since June 14, and the trip would culminate in Chennai on July 2. A medical team is being deployed from the district headquarters government hospital to collect the blood from the donors, and at the end of the day, the entire collection would be handed over to the hospital concerned. From men, 350 ml of blood and from women 300 ml of blood each is being extracted.

         S.Vidyasankar, Medical Officer (Blood Bank), told The Hindu that after the blood swabs were collected by using fresh needle for each candidate, the blood grouping was determined. Those in the age group of 18 to 65 years, weighing 45 kg and above, and having Hb count of 12 gm/dl and a blood pressure of 90/60 to 160/100 could donate blood once in three months in the case of male and once in four months in case of female (Because of the menstrual cycle it might require one more month for women to recoup the blood). Dr. Vidyasankar further said that after a thorough screening blood free from the symptoms of five diseases such as HIV, HBsAg and HAC (two types of hepatitis), malaria and VDRL (venereal diseases) would be put to use.

Polls put government colleges in a predicament

CUDDALORE: 

           The Assembly elections have put government colleges in a predicament as they have invariably doubled up as examination and counting centres.

           Therefore, even though in the midst of conducting the academic year-end university examinations, these colleges would have to provide adequate space for accommodating the electronic voting machines and the security personnel till the counting is over.

            In playing the dual role, these colleges are facing practical difficulties and logistic problems. For instance, three government arts colleges in Cuddalore district such as Periyar Government Arts College located near the Silver Beach and two others at Vriddhachalam and Chidambaram are the designated counting centres for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Hitherto, these colleges have never faced such a piquant situation as of now, mainly because of the extended schedule for counting slated for May 13, exactly a month after the polling was over on April 13.

            Students and lecturers are seen going hither and thither inside Periyar Government Arts College, unmindful of the security drill and the armed personnel perching atop the watchtowers erected on the college campus. It defies the notion that the counting centres are the heavily guarded fortresses that cannot be easily accessed by commoners. Of the three wings of the college, the middle one has been taken over by the election authorities to be used as strongrooms for storing the EVMs of the four Assembly constituencies such as Cuddalore, Panruti, Kurinjipadi and Neyveli.

           While the first wing has been used as the administrative block, the third one is serving as examination centre. The students, numbering over 6,000, have been visiting the college in batches to take the examinations. Hence, the college has been bubbling with activity throughout the day. The security personnel at the main entrance verify their identity cards before allowing them inside and the lecturers are also subjected to the same rigour. Principal in-charge of the college K. Renganathan told The Hindu that after the EVMs were stored, the movement of the staff and students was restricted.

           On April 16, the students who did not bring their identity cards had difficulty in entering the college to get their hall tickets and, therefore, each of them had to be personally identified by the lecturers for gaining entry. A farewell party to be hosted in honour of two retiring professors on April 19 could not be held owing to opposition from political parties in holding any such event on the college premises. Mr. Renganathan further said that given the large number of students neither the examinations could be postponed nor could the venue be changed.

           Moreover, under the Thiruvalluvar University, there were 96 colleges all of which would have to complete the examinations, take up the valuation work, publish the results and start the admission procedures for the coming academic year within a time frame. Therefore, to avoid any further complication in this aspect, the university had allowed the colleges to conduct the examinations in two spells - one from April 16 to May 10, and, another from May 16 to 21. On an average, about 1,000 students were sitting for the examination every day, he said.

             Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis said that since the strongrooms were fully secured there need not be any concern over their safety. Other than the entry of students, the thoroughfares running along these colleges were either cordoned off or vehicular traffic was diverted.

Cuddalore Periyar Arts College told to change function venue

CUDDALORE: 

        A vehicle carrying the paraphernalia for a college function, said to be a farewell party, was turned back by security personnel and booth agents of political parties at Periyar Government Arts College here on Tuesday.

         The college is serving as a storing point for electronic voting machines collected from the Assembly constituencies such as Cuddalore, Panruti, Neyveli and Kurinjipadi, as well as the counting centre. However, college authorities, unaware of the election rules, were about to hold a function already scheduled on the college premises. When the articles were about to be unloaded from the vehicle, the agents of political parties already stationed there objected to it.

         All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres, including the candidate for the Cuddalore constituency, M.C.Sampath, went to the centre and asked how could the vehicle enter the premises of the counting centre, despite heavy security posted there. When it was brought to the notice of Collector P. Seetharaman, who is also the District Electoral Officer, he denied permission for the function and directed the college authorities to look for alternative venue. Accordingly, the college authorities put off the event and agreed to shift the venue.
