The 8th Graduation Day function of Periyar Government Arts College, Cuddalore Commenced at 11.00 A.M on 08th January, 2016

Periyar Arts College,
Cuddalore was established in 1964 as a Government Arts College under the
auspices of the South Arcot District Development Council and was shifted to the
present site in 1970. The college has grown from strength to strength in the
past 50 years.
Initially started as a College
for P.U.C course with meagre student strength of 360 there are 4100 students at
present. There are 17 Departments offering 16 UG and 11 PG Courses. 9
Departments offer M.Phil & Ph.D research programmes. The teaching staffs
who number 159, leave no stone unturned in their effort to develop the quality
of our students. The non-teaching staffs too play an important role in the
successful functioning of the college.
In this Graduation Day
function 19 M.phil Students belonging to Tamil, 639 Under Graduate students 262
Post graduate students belonging to Botany, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry,
Commerce, Computer Science, Economics, English Literature, Tamil Literature,
History, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology are being awarded degree Certificates. Eight students
have achieved the unique feat of securing University Ranks in the Thiruvalluvar
University Examinations conducted in May/June, 2014.
I take the honour of
presenting the reports of the various Departments as a hallmark of our
progress.
The Department of
Zoology conducted a National Conference on ‘Bio-safety for health security’
sponsored by TNSCST on 23rd and 24th July, 2015.The
students of the Zoology department participated in the Youth rally on 15th
oct,2015 as of the birthday celebrations of the former
President of India, Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam.
The Department of Botany
The Department of Botany
hosted the UGC sponsored National conference on “Modern Trends in Biodiversity
conservation and its sustainable Utilization” on 17and 18th July
2014.The Botanical society of the college celebrated and staged a Programme on (a)
Sagaja Yoga (b) Piling on desire (c) Organic farming, in keeping with the pioneering steps of our honorable Prime Minister
on health care. On February 6th & 7th, 2015, a
National Seminar on human managerial skills was conducted on the trendsetting
title: “New Trends on Bio-ethics in Biology. A few students and a member of faculty
of the Botany Department participated in a National Seminar on Meta Genomics on
27th July 2015 at St.Joseph’s college of Arts and Science, Cuddalore.
The Department of Chemistry
The Department
of Chemistry conducted a workshop on “From University to Industry: Fostering interest
in Chemistry among students “sponsored by TNSCST and UGC-IQAC on 25th
and 26th September 2015.A souvenir was published on the occasion including 55
research articles. A lecture workshop on “New Frontiers in Chemistry”, funded by
the “Science Academics of India” was held on 29th and 30th
January,2015 Moreover , a “State Level Proficiency Test-2015” was conducted in
collaboration with Rama Subhu Jayaraman Trust on 8th February,2015
to select students for free coaching for UGC-CSIR-SLET Exams.
B.Shahira Banu and
K.Dayanidhi of II B.sc Chemistry won prizes in the Elocution Competition
conducted on behalf of the 112th Birthday celebrations of
Perunthalaivar Kamarajar.
The Dept of Computer Science
The Dept of Computer Science had the unique distinction
of conducting four major programmes, namely, ”Women Interest Awareness’
Campaign”, a seminar on Network Security,
a two day National Level Workshop on Cloud Computing-Big Data
The Department of Physics
conducted a seminar and a science exhibition on 28/02/2014 on the occasion of
National Science Day. Dr.S.V.M.Sathyanarayana, Professor, Dept of Physics,
Pondicherry University, Pondicherry and Dr.S.Periandi, Professor, Dept of
Physics, Tagore Arts College, Pondicherry participated as special guests and
gave thought provoking speeches on the topic” New Trends in Physics”.
Department of Economics
3 students of
Department of Economics got University ranks in May 2014 Examination.
Ms.J.Devika of U.G Economics got 6th rank and P.Kalaimathy and
J.Mohanalakshmi of P.G got 4th and 6th rank respectively.
Mrs.A.Bamula and
Mrs.P.Geetha Guest Lectures along with 4 of our PG & UG students attend
training on “Capacity Building Programme on Commodity Futures”. On Sept. 19th
& 20th 2014 Organized by the TamilNadu Agriculture University.
Mrs.V.Abiramasundari presented paper on Quality Improvement” in a
Conference-(IQAC)
S.Kamalbasha of II M.A,
and M.Sivaguru of III B.A took part in U.G.C sponsored “Youth Parliament”
organized by Political Science Department during Feb 2015.
V.Vijayakumar and
Sarathkumar of III B.A Economics played in Inter Divisional Level Volleyball
math representing the college.
V.Vijayakumar has been
selected to represent Thiruvalluvar University.
P. Bharam of II M.A
represented of EM represented Thiruvalluvar University in chess match at the
National Level.
Sivaguru and Ashokkumar
of EM represented cricket in the Inter Division Level.
P.Chellapandian
Participated Hockey matches in the Inter Division Level.
Shan Muga Sundaram of
III B.A EM participated in the KHO-KHO at the Inter Division Level.
The Department of English
The Department of English had a fruitful year in
2014. The students of the English Department won the overall championship in
the cultural, literary and academic Competitions conducted by the Jawaharlal
Nehru College of Arts and Science, Ulundurpet. The performance of PG students
namely, Mr. K.Kathavarayan, Mr. Manoj, Mr. K. Kishore Chandra Gupta,
Mr.G.Veeramani, Ms. S.Selvarani, and UG students D.Leo Rosario, Mr.S.Srithar
and Ms.S.SelvaPriya was praiseworthy.
The Department
of Tamil
The
inauguration of the 1st research seminar comprising teachers and
students was held on 10/09/2014. The second seminar was held on 24/09/2014. On
behalf of the Tamil Department elocution, essay writing, poetry writing
competitions were conducted at the district and state levels. The details of
prize winners are as follows:
1.
In the district level elocution Competition conducted by the Forest Department
Ms.Gowadhami of II B.A English Literature won the II prize, Mr.Madhivanan of I
B.com won the I prize and E.Vijayasanthi, won the II prize in the competition.
2.
On behalf of the Tamil Development Department, Govt of TamilNadu state
level competitions were held. In the elocution
competition Aravindavel of II M.Sc Physics won the I prize of Rs.10,000/- In the essay writing competition,
Gowthaman of I BA Tamil Literature won
the II prize of Rs 7000/-.

On behalf of the Revenue Department of Cuddalore varions, competitions related
to the Tsunami day were conducted in the elocution competition E.Umamaheshwari
of I B.Sc Chemistry won the I prize and Mr.Pandithurai of III B.Sc Mathematics
won the II prize. In the easy writing competition T.Santhiya of II BA Tamil Literature
won the I Prize and Mr.P.Gowthaman of I MA Tamil Literature won the II prize.
In the art Competition Mr.S.Sambathkumar of III BA Tamil Literature
won the I prize and Mr.Arivudainambi of III BA Economics won the II prize
On
26/02/2015 a debate on the topic “In Today’s educational scenario it is the
teachers/ parents who play the major role “was conducted on behalf of Tamil
Department.
On
31/12/2011 students who secured highest marks in the university examinations in
Part I Tamil Language paper and Tamil literature main subjects were given
prizes on behalf of K.Iyyappan (former Member of Legislative Assembly,
Tamilnadu) Trust.
A
workshop on “Tolkappiyam and modern Linguistic Theories” was conducted from
06/02/2015 to 15/02/2015. It was sponsored by the Classical Tamil Research
Centre, Chennai. Dr.S.Elumalai, Asst.Prof of Tamil organized the workshop.
In
this academic year Mr.S.Elango, Dr.T.Kalairasi and Dr.J.Shyamal of the Department
of Tamil have received research grants worth Rs.2, 000, 00/- from the
university Grants Commission, New Delhi.
Ms.Ilayarani
of II MA Tamil Literature has achieved the distinction of securing 9th
Rank in the Thiruvalluvar University Examinations.
The
Department Political Science
The
Department of Political Science was started in 2013-2014 with strength of 30 students.
The department conducted a National Seminar on 20/7/2015 on“Thiruvalluvar’s
principles on good governance”. A State
level conference on “Higher Education on the Cross Road” was held on 28/8/2015
in collaboration with the IIPA – Indian Institute of Public Administration
Cuddalore branch. A State level seminar on “Periyar and Social Justice” was
conducted on 17/9/15. A national voter’s awareness rally was conducted on
21/10/2015 according to the guidelines of the State Election Commission. “The first Political constitution function “was
celebrated on 26/11/2015 in pursuance of the Central Government orders. On
10/12/2015 “The World Human Rights Day” was observed on behalf of the Political
Science Department.
Alumni
Association
The
Alumni Association of our college was started for the welfare of students under
the guidance of former Principal Mr.T.SahayaDass. This Organization was
officially registered on 31/12/2013. The Alumni Association contributes a
substantial amount from its fund for the expenditure incurred towards
development and maintenance activities of our college.
Fine Arts Club
The Fine Arts Club of Periyar Arts College, Cuddalore-1
performs the Zeo mans service of tapping the histrionic talents of the
students.2014 was a memorable year or the college as the students of our
college won Rs.5lakes super stars contest conducted by Suryan FM on 23/12/2014.
The students of our college participated in several cultural, literary and
academic Inter-collegiate competitions and won rich laurels for our college
Parent
Teacher Association
The Parent Teacher
association of Periyar Arts College, Cuddalore plays the important role of
forming a triangular bond between the Parent-Teacher and student. Teacher’s day
(5th September) is celebrated every year on behalf of PTA. The PTA
conducts regular meetings and informs the parents about the student’s academic
progress.
